Privacy Policy

Last updated: 1 June 2026. locale is an early-stage (alpha) product operated by an independent developer. Contact: hello@locale.fyi.

This policy explains what locale collects, why, and the control you have. We built locale to be the opposite of a data-harvesting social app — we collect the minimum needed to make shared place-lists and plans work, and we never sell it.

What we collect

• Account: your email address (for sign-in via magic link / password), and an optional display name, username, and avatar.
• Your content: the places you save (names, locations/coordinates, addresses, your notes and tags), lists, trips, "intents" (e.g. "down for this place tonight"), memories you attach to places (who came, a note, an optional photo), and the circles/friends you create.
• Technical: standard request data (IP address, timestamps) processed transiently by our hosting/proxy providers to operate and protect the service.

Where it's stored & who processes it

• Supabase (database, authentication, and photo storage). Your data is access-controlled per account via row-level security.
• Cloudflare Workers — a thin proxy for geocoding and for optional AI features, so API keys stay off your device.
• AI features (optional, only when you use them): place names and related text you choose to enrich/categorize may be sent to AI providers — Google (Gemini), and as fallbacks Anthropic and DeepSeek — to generate a category or itinerary. Don't use AI features if you don't want that text processed by these providers.
• Netlify hosts the app and this site.

What we do NOT do

• No ads, no sponsored placements, no ad-targeting.
• No selling or renting your personal data to anyone.
• No public discovery feed — your places stay scoped to you and the circles you choose. Tags only contribute to shared/aggregate knowledge if you explicitly opt in.

Your controls

• Access & export: in the app, Settings → Your data offers a full JSON export of your library.
• Erase data: "Erase all data" wipes your content (local + cloud) while keeping your login.
• Delete account: "Delete my account" permanently removes your account, login, email, content, and photos from our systems. This cannot be undone.
• EU/UK/California residents: you have rights of access, correction, deletion, and portability. Email hello@locale.fyi and we'll action it.

Retention & security

We keep your data while your account is active. When you delete your account, it's removed from the live database; residual copies in routine encrypted backups age out within ~30 days. Data is encrypted in transit. No method is perfectly secure, and as an alpha product locale is provided without warranty (see the Terms).

Children

locale isn't directed to anyone under 16. Don't use it if you're under 16.

We'll update this page as the product evolves and revise the date above. Material changes will be surfaced in the app.
